In The NRL
I'm Willie Tonga, a former NRL player who had the privilege of playing for teams like the Parramatta Eels, Canterbury Bulldogs, and North Queensland Cowboys. My career had its fair share of highlights, including a Premiership win and the honor of representing both Australia and Queensland in international and State of Origin competitions.
Despite these achievements, my journey through rugby league was filled with many personal challenges. Frequent injuries tested my resilience, requiring constant physical and mental determination to return to the field each time. More quietly, I battled with depression throughout my career, a struggle that taught me much about strength and vulnerability.
After retiring from professional rugby, I faced the tough transition to everyday life, which was harder than I anticipated. This experience has deepened my commitment to mental health advocacy, and I now focus on using my story to help others. As a speaker and mentor, I aim to support those who might be dealing with similar challenges, sharing insights and encouragement drawn from my own life's ups and downs.
Get To Know Me

It has taken me years to find my new purpose & passion about helping others - especially our Indigenous youth - because I know what it feels like to come from a small town with big dreams. I grew up in Peak Hill, and I was lucky enough to be given a chance that changed my life. Now, I want to be that reminder for the next generation - that no matter where you come from, your dreams are possible.
Throughout my NRL career, I stayed quiet about my struggles. I thought speaking up was a sign of weakness. But I’ve come to understand that sharing our battles is a strength - and it’s necessary. No one should have to go through depression or hardship alone. Our men, especially, need to know it’s okay to talk, to feel, and to heal.
Over the years, I’ve shared my journey at corporate events, in schools, juvenile justice centres, and community gatherings. I speak from experience - about resilience, mental wellness, and self-belief. In Indigenous communities and youth justice programs, I focus on real connection - meeting young people where they’re at and helping them see the value in themselves.
What drives me is knowing that even one conversation can shift someone’s path. I don’t just want to inspire - I want to give people the tools to take control of their future, just like I was once given the chance to take control of mine.
